Colbert To Go Live After Trump’s Congressional Address

Stephen Colbert certainly knows which side of his bread is buttered. Politically and comically, that would be the left side. The Late Show host has been picking up some wins lately and has even beaten rival Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon in the ratings for two straight weeks. In order to help keep that momentum going, CBS announced that the Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be doing another night of live programming. The Late Show goes live on Tuesday, February 28th to coincide with President Trump’s speech to Congress that evening.
Colbert is proving that whether he’s in character or not, (as The Colbert Report’s Stephen Colbert), politics is his comedy playground and Trump is his favorite toy. The CBS late night host had his most critically acclaimed performances before, during and after the 2016 Presidential election. Some of his best nights were his live editions of the Late Show that aired after significant milestones in the Presidential race. Since President Trump’s inauguration, Colbert has spun his passion for political humor into not only comedy gold, but ratings wins as well. It’s only natural that he would keep looking for the Trump White House to give him reasons to do more live shows.
The live Late Show on February 28th is Colbert’s latest effort to piggyback on a big night for the President. It will be the 15th time that Colbert has gone live with his show. On that Tuesday, President Trump will give a speech to both houses of Congress to update them on how his administration is coming along after just over 30 days in the White House. The less formal speech will be an alternative to the official Presidential State of the Union address that usually happens this time of year. Incoming Presidents usually skip the State of the Union at the beginning of their terms. Stephen Colbert, however, does not plan on skipping coverage of the event and a chance that Trump could have a major gaffe.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be live in its regular time slot, 11:35pm Eastern, on Tuesday, February 28th on CBS with special guests Lisa Kudrow and former White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.
