SNL Enjoying Ratings High

As the old saying goes: “No publicity is bad publicity.” Such is true for Saturday Night Live, which has been in the news regularly for the past few months for a variety of reasons, from the suspension of writer Katie Rich, to Alec Baldwin’s controversial portrayal of Donald Trump and Trump’s subsequent outbursts about said portrayal. While not all the coverage has been positive, you wouldn’t know it from looking at the show’s numbers, which have skyrocketed this season. In fact, the last time the show enjoyed ratings this high was during the 1994-1995 season.

The show’s overall viewership has increased from 8.7 million to 10.6 million, and it has made significant gains (a 19% increase) in the key 18-49 demographic.  Variety speculates that the bump in ratings this past weekend was likely due to Melissa McCarthy’s buzzworthy appearance as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, which has been a huge topic of conversation online all week since it aired.

With Trump in office and the show’s repertoire of political impersonations growing ever larger, it looks like SNL is poised to enjoy some newfound attention for the foreseeable future
