Samantha Bee Plans to Host Opposite the Correspondents’ Dinner; Gets an Official Response

Anyone who’s watched Full Frontal with Samantha Bee on TBS knows that Bee is a big advocate for journalistic integrity. She’s made quite clear just how important she holds the press to be, and now she’s looking to show them a little appreciation. In a press statement earlier this week, Bee announced that she, along with TBS, will be throwing a special event called Not The White House Correspondents’ Dinner. It’s like the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, except it’s not.

For those who are unaware, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is a gala event hosted by the White House in which members of the press, along with a select few celebrities, get to be acknowledged and even roast the President a bit. Bee’s event will take place on April 29th, the same night as the real Correspondents’ Dinner, and will play host to “non-irritating” celebrities and journalists who weren’t invited to the real dinner. Given Trump’s very vocal feelings about the press (i.e. that they’re “scum” who he views as opposition), it’s quite possible that there will be plenty of journalists with no plans that night who may just take Bee up on her invitation.

“The evening is sure to bring plenty of surprises, music, food, and laughter-and if you’re not careful you just might learn something. Specifically, you’ll learn how screwed we’d be without a free press,” said Bee in the release.

Bee’s plans have apparently drummed up enough concern from journalists that Jeff Mason, the President of the White House Correspondents’ Association, was forced to hastily type up a statement that he then tweeted out on Thursday, assuring members of the press that the actual White House Correspondents’ Dinner would be taking place on its regularly scheduled night, regardless of what anyone else had heard.
