Stephen Colbert To Host The 69th Annual Emmy Awards

Stephen Colbert continues to flex his hosting muscles. The host of the Late Show, the 39th Annual Kennedy Center Honors and his own Election Night special on Showtime, has been announced as the host of this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards on CBS. Sure, it’s his own network, but this is really more of trying to keep up with the Joneses, or in this case, the Jimmys. Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the Oscars, Jimmy Fallon just did the Golden Globes and coming up next month, Jimmy James Corden will be hosting the Grammy Awards. It’s only natural that Stephen Colbert would grab the one major awards show left to grab. Also, it marks the first time that CBS has used its own late night host as the host of the Emmys. David Letterman would never emcee the ceremony whenever it rotated to the Tiffany Network.

Speaking about his new awards assignment, Colbert said in a statement, “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period. Both in person and around the globe.” The statement was an obvious slam on President Trump’s new press secretary, Sean Spicer. Considering how much time on the Late Show that Stephen Colbert spends on the new President, it’s seems definite that his opening Emmys monologue would express a few more thoughts on the Trump Administration. And the Emmys aren’t until September. Imagine how much President Trump material will be available after he’s in office 9 months.

CBS Executive Vice-President in charge of Specials, Music and Live Events, Jack Sussman said, “We’re excited to kick off the new season and celebrate the top achievements in television with Stephen Colbert as host of the Primetime Emmys. Stephen is the ultimate master of ceremonies with award-winning creative talents, and as we’ve seen the past few months, he has a fearless passion for live television. We look forward to honoring television’s best while entertaining audiences with the creative energy and sharp comedy of Stephen Colbert.”

Sussman should be excited. The recent political season has helped Stephen Colbert’s Late Show in the ratings. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Though his telecast is still No. 2 to NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon among adults 18-49, he has posted strong gains with his politically focused outings. This past week, he won four of five nights among households.”

The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards hosted by Stephen Colbert will broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 17th at 8pm on CBS.
