All of us here at The Interrobang are thrilled to announce that the next installment of our Comedy 101: Tell a Joke or Be a Joke series will be taking place at this year’s New York Comedy Festival!

Comedy 101 is a combination open mic/roast show that we’ve previously hosted at venues like The Stand and The Village Underground and The Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square, in collaboration with Ron and Gail Bennington, hosts of the SiriusXM show Bennington. The father/daughter team act as moderators of each event, which sees a group of five open mic comics having their dreams made (or dashed) by a panel of three veteran comedians. The rookies take to the stage in front of a real audience for their first time ever and have a precious few moments to make the crowd and panel of mentors laugh; If they fail, the mentors will not hesitate to ring in with their bells and absolutely eviscerate both the open mic’ers and each other. This is survival of the fittest, folks: Tell a joke or be a joke!  The results are brutally funny, and we mean brutal because the mentors are chosen from the quickest and the funniest comics in New York City, with a reputation for showing no mercy. No one is spared.

Being torn apart by New York’s finest is a rite of passage in comedy, and you can witness it live.

This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, November 1st at The Village Underground. Tickets are $15 and the show starts at 9 p.m., but the venue will fill up quickly, so be sure to get there early and secure your seats! You can get your tickets here. The panel of veteran judges will be announced as the date gets closer.

Previous events have been judged by New York City favorites Robert Kelly, Rich Vos, Bonnie McFarlane, Dan Soder, Big Jay Oakerson, Kurt Metzger, Joe List, Luis J. Gomez and Sal Vulcano. All of the comics that have judged the events previously have had a blast with the format with several saying it’s the most fun they’ve ever had doing a show. These comics are masters of the roast, so giving them a bell that they can ring whenever they want to chime in and knock somebody down a peg or two makes for a hilarious exchanges.

Comedy 101 is New York comedy personified. It’s confrontational, it’s crass, it’s raucous, and it’s an absolute blast. Since its inception at the Bennington Family Thanksgiving Dinner in 2015, the show has quickly gained buzz and a loyal following. The initial show, hosted at Times Square’s Hard Rock Cafe, was a packed-out success, and has spawned follow-up shows at comedy mainstays like The Village Underground and The Stand that have only improved over time.

This iteration of Comedy 101: Tell a Joke or Be a Joke promises to be the most refined one yet, and all of us here at The Interrobang are looking forward to working together with the folks at the New York Comedy Festival. The festival will take place from November 1st – 6th and will feature performances from comics like Hannibal Buress, Trevor Noah, Bridget Everett, Tig Notaro, Bill Maher, TJ Miller, Patton Oswalt, Eric Andre, Cameron Esposito, Marc Maron and many more at a host of the city’s best comedy venues.
