Emmys Tonight! You Can Watch Jimmy Kimmel’s Monologue in 360

Here’s yet another reminder that we are hurtling uncontrollably into the future: As a part of Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue at Sunday’s 68th Emmy Awards, the talk show host will be captured on 360 degree video that will be available to view on Facebook immediately after it airs on television.

According to Variety, Facebook has an exclusive deal with the Television Academy that will allow the social-media giant to utilize both its 360 degree video and live video technology to capture the minute-to-minute happenings of the awards in an unprecedented way. The 360 degree technology will be used to show Kimmel’s monologue as seen from the orchestra pit (showing both the stage and the crowd) as well as a first-look at the red carpet, while the Facebook Live video feature will be used to show backstage antics and a “thank-you cam” that certain award winners will be checking in with. All of these features will be available through the Facebook pages of either Kimmel, ABC or the Emmy Awards/Television Academy.

And just in case those unnecessarily-immersive experiences don’t seem like quite enough to you, you’ll be glad to know that the 360 degree videos will be compatible with Samsung Gear devices, meaning you can watch Kimmel and all of those botox-riddled faces feigning laughter and looking uncomfortable in virtual reality. These sure are interesting times we live in.

The 68th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC and streamed live through ABC.com. Red carpet coverage begins at 4 p.m., with the actual award ceremony starting at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
