Jon Stewart, Louis C.K. Headlining ‘Stand Up for Heroes’

Each year, the Bob Woodruff Foundation and the New York Comedy Festival team up to throw the Stand Up for Heroes benefit, a star-studded comedy and music event that raises millions of dollars each year to support wounded or ill veterans and service members. Since its inception in 2007, the benefit has pulled in some of the biggest names in comedy and music, enabling it to raise a whopping total of $33 million for our nation’s veterans. Well, SUfH clearly has no intention of slowing down, as they’ve announced this year’s 10th anniversary lineup and (big surprise), it’s killer.
On the music front, the only act announced so far is literal-embodiment-of-America Bruce Springsteen, who has performed at every SUfH since the benefit was started. Ready to perform on the comedy side are industry juggernauts Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K., Jon Stewart and Jim Gaffigan, most of whom are also making recurring appearances at the event.
In 2006, Bob Woodruff, an ABC news correspondent, was injured by a roadside bomb while covering the war in Iraq. Seeing the struggles of wounded soldiers firsthand, Bob and his wife Lee created the Bob Woodruff Foundation to help raise and allocate funds for the veterans programs that need them the most. They teamed up with Caroline Hirsch and Andrew Fox, founders of the New York Comedy Festival, in order to bring some much-needed attention to the plight of our veterans, and the rest is history. The event, which started at New York’s Town Hall, has vastly grown in size, now taking place at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
“We look forward to Stand Up for Heroes each year not only because it’s grown into New York’s biggest night of comedy and music, but because a decade of laughter has translated into a lifetime of immeasurable support for our nation’s injured heroes,” said Bob Woodruff. “As we commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11 and the wars that have followed, it’s important not to lose sight of the fact that a small percentage of our population stood up for us—it’s now our turn to stand up for them.”
Stand Up for Heroes is the flagship event of the New York Comedy Festival. The benefit will kick off the festival on November 1st, and the festival itself will run until November 6th. In addition to Stand Up for Heroes, the New York Comedy Festival will host over 200 comedians at a handful of venues, from Carnegie Hall and the Beacon Theatre to Carolines on Broadway. Tickets are available now and can be bought via the Bob Woodruff Foundation website, the New York Comedy Festival website, or Ticketmaster).
