HBO Latino Creates Late Night Show Helmed by Mexican Comedian

HBO Latino announced today that they will be entering the political satire game with their new show, Chumel con Chumel Torres. The show, hosted by Mexican comedian Jose Manuel “Chumel” Torres, will be a weekly political humor and satire show, rounding up the news from around Latin America and the United States in a fashion similar to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver or The Daily Show.
For those unfamiliar with Torres: He’s a Mexican comic who quickly rose to prominence with his popular YouTube show, El Pulso de la República, in which he enthusiastically lambasts Latin American news and interviews various politicians and public figures. Since he started El Pulso, he has become one of the most popular satirists in Mexico, garnering over 1.5 million YouTube subscribers and receiving hundreds of thousands of views on many of his videos.
“I don’t think what I say, I say what I think, but also what people think in regards to the news and that’s what you’ll hear here. I’m excited to work with HBO (Latin America) because it has always been the benchmark for the best content in the world. HBO is the closest to a free medium, like the Internet; it trusts the show’s content above anything else,” Torres said of the new deal with HBO.
“HBO seeks to drive Latin American talent to be able to express freely and with a voice of their own, breaking the barriers of traditional entertainment. Chumel Torres has captivated a large audience with his particular analytical style, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to HBO, where we’re sure he will reach millions more,” said Roberto Ríos, Corporate Vice-President of Original Productions, HBO Latin America.
“We are excited to bring a fresh, new voice like Chumel’s to HBO Latino. It’s an opportunity we have for the first time to speak directly to the growing U.S. Latino millennial audience, looking for entertainment that directly reflects their sentiments on current events,” added Vice President of Multicultural Marketing, Jackie Gagne.
Chumel con Chumel Torres will debut at 11 p.m. on Monday, July 25th and will air every Monday night. It can be found on HBO Latino, HBO NOW and HBO GO.
