Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live: November 12, 2016

dave chappelle who is hosting saturday night live

Saturday Night Live heads into its first post-election week with an episode that’s not only live– it’s also an episode that has music and comedy fans ecstatic. Dave Chappelle is hosting for the very first time, and Dave Chappelle is one of the funniest, most respected, most enigmatic and most interesting people in the comedy world. Making things more interesting, hosting a popular mainstream sketch show seems outside of his wheelhouse. This is his first time hosting at 30 Rock, and although he’s been touring extensively, it will be his first mainstream media appearance since 2005

In case you’ve been living in a cave, Dave created his own sketch comedy show- Chappelle’s Show- which ran from 2003 to 2005. Chappelle’s Show was not only critically acclaimed but was beloved by fans. And still, at what seemed to be the peak of Chappelle’s popularity, he walked away from the show, refusing massive sums of money. He’s been called brilliant, genius, and one of the greatest stand-ups performing today, and he has a history of putting his brand of integrity and truth above fame, influence, and success. Seeing an independent thinker like Chappelle sharing a comedic environment with the all-powerful Lorne Michaels should provide for some interesting television.

Given the surprising results of this week’s election, it feels like America can definitely use a dose of what Chappelle can provide. But the only thing you can count on with Dave is to expect the unexpected. Just last Friday, Chappelle made headlines for a controversial performance at the Cutting Room in New York City. The Observer reported that he expressed Pro-Trump and Anti-Hillary sentiments, but a spokesperson for the comic denied the report and said that Dave was disgusted by the idea that he was supportive of the President-Elect.

Sharing the stage with Chappelle for this week’s episode is an equally worthy musical guest. A Tribe Called Quest will perform.

A new promo for tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Live takes the perfect angle, teasing the question of whether Chappelle will even show up to helm the episode. It’s a good start.
