The Schwartz may be with you again! Mel Brooks is talking about doing a sequel to his 1987 comedy “Spaceballs”.The film was a Star Wars spoof starring Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Rick Moranis, John Candy, Joan Rivers and Mel Brooks himself in dual roles.

According to E!, Brooks made the comments on Adam Carolla’s “Take a Knee” podcast. He said his renewed interest in the project comes from Disney putting out a new “Star Wars” movie directed by J.J. Abrams. He said, “And I’m thinking now, if I said, if I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out, you know, maybe a couple of months later, Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, I’d have a big weekend, you know, no matter what, even if it fell on its ass and you know, didn’t get that money back”.

Brooks got the idea for the title of the “Spaceballs” sequel from a joke he wrote in the original.

As for his cast, John Candy and Joan Rivers have both passed away. Brooks added, “I still have Daphne Zuniga and I still have Rick Moranis if he’d do it, and I’ve still got me.” Getting Rick Moranis to come back as the villain Dark Helmet might not be so easy. He’s retired from on screen acting. And Moranis also talked about the possibility of a sequel in 2013 interview saying, “And I was unable to make a deal with Mel. I couldn’t make a deal.”

If “Spaceballs 2” goes into production, hopefully Mel Brooks will do it at “ludicrous speed”.
