As one character gets killed off, a new one sails in on The Simpsons. Nick Offerman from Parks and Recreation makes his “Simpsons” debut this Sunday. The man who builds his own canoes will voice Captain Bowditch who is the skipper of the “Relation Ship” where Homer and Bart are sent to sea to work on their father-son skills.

Offerman told EW that he’s thrilled to be on The Simpsons and getting to play a seafaring character makes it all the better. “Not only to just be on The Simpsons, which is the crazy manifestation of a lifelong dream, but to do so as a sea captain was so dreamy for me because I love old seafaring novels and any lore of Her Majesty’s Royal Navy, all the Horatio Hornblower books and Patrick O’Brian novels”. Hopefully he realizes he doesn’t really get to go out to sea.

He described his character as “sloppy” and a “broken man” and that it was a “Parks and Rec” connection that helped him get the part. “And Mike Scully, a veteran Simpsons writer who’s also a Parks writer, said, ‘Drunken jackass? Get Offerman.’”

Preparing for The Simpsons, Offerman went deep to figure out Captain Bowditch’s motivation to live a life of alcoholism at sea. He said – “It’s not like we wake up one day and make a cognitive choice to be a drunk buffoon, it comes usually as the result of trying to medicate some other failure or pain that we’re going through”.

Here’s a quick first look of Nick Offerman on The Simpsons premiering Sunday, October 5th on FOX.
