Big Jay Oakerson Says Legendary Comedy Club Owner is Threatening to Ban Him From Every New York Club

big jay oakerson fight with club owner

Huge things are happening for New York comedian . He’s getting his own radio show, his own Comedy Central hour special, and his podcast, Legion of Skanks was recently picked up by the new Anthony Cumia Network. But that won’t stop him from speaking his mind, even at the risk of pissing off a club owner. Last night, according to Big Jay’s twitter, he interceded in a fight taking place between a fellow comic and a disruptive audience member, and now he says the club owner has banned him from the club for life.  And, he says the club owner is threatening to get every New York club owner to follow suit. Here’s what went down, according to a lengthy series of tweets from Oakerson. These are the tweets in his words, put into order.

Big Fights With Club Owner

A comedian named William Stephenson was hosting at the comic strip on Friday and was dealing with a girl and her bf all show for being disruptive and when the staff didn’t even speak to them or warn or even shush them, he eventually called her a cunt. Her bf jumped on stage to square up to William while all the male staff members watched. William is in his 50’s the guy was in his 20’s… I jumped on stage and removed the guy, walking past the entire staff who were sitting on their hands… I then went on stage and did my set! In the set I explained how good the comic strip used to be and my sadness for what it’s become…. A shitty club! It was once the premier club in nyc and now it’s 30 people on a Friday, drunk and disorderly with no real authority stopping them. The owner texted me today …

This is what that went like! Lol

According to Jay, this is the text he received from the owner:

Club Owner: U have some pair of balls.,taking my money and saying what u did about the strip.well rest easy u will get ur wish.you will never perform at the strip @again nor will william.he called a women a cunt.that is unacceptable and u u fucking stuck up for him.lm amazed that u think its okay to talk to women l@ike that and by the way her boyfriend should have beat the shit out of william but for u to defend him and knock the club.u are a piece of shit and l ha@ve everything u and william said recorded.lm going to go out of my way to reach out to all the other club in nyc and let them know what a douchbag u are@.u also had the balls to say hello to me after u berated the strip to hurt it so now its my turn to see if u can withstand all the other clubs knowing h@ow disrespectful u are so thanks for ridding the strip of your presence and william also.see u on the unemployment line.l wont be unemployed but l will @try to see that u 2 are

Big Jay Oakerson: I actually said hi to you b4 the 2nd show when that all happened… Your staff watched me have to go protect a comic from a charging audience member. Unacceptable!! Lol, you think that’s the way it should have been handled? Honestly?? It’s a shame you don’t see what has happened to your once great business. Unemployment line for me? Doubtful, but give it a shot! Also, I took money for doing my job (which I did) AND the job of bouncer, which you don’t have anymore, in a business that serves alcohol.

Club Owner: Ok l will if u think the club has become a dump its because of assholes like u and william that bring clubs to the ground.believe me ur no eddie murphy@ or jerry sienfield or adam or ray or larry and u know it.personally l think the other club owners would be very interested to know what u are capable @of.

Big Jay Oakerson: Larry miller or ?? I’m at least a Larry miller, no? (Sorry Larry miller, that’ was just funny)

Club Owner: Who the fuckare u to think u can defend a mc that calls a women a cunt.trust me if there was a bouncer.l would have told him to leavethe room and let th@e boyfriend beat the crap out ofwilliam and u also.do u think it went over well with the audience.william and u both look like assholes even the other c@omics are talkng about it dont bother me anymore.let comedy central think your great. (Lol, he texted me!)

Big Jay Oakerson: I think when an audience member is being unruly for the whole show and fucking it up, and the club does NOTHING about it, a comic can say whatever he wants. You wishing violence on a comic from the audience is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard a person say! Do you really feel that way and think that people are gonna get behind that? Cmon Ritchie, you gotta be wiser than that buddy! Thanks for the vote of luck with Comedy Central… I’ll keep you posted

Oakerson also tweeted

Any club owner who believes even the harshest of words from a comic, especially when the club has no security, should have physical violence done to them is a next level moron!! #WhatABoob. For the record, I said on stage Friday night that this will be my last performance at the comic strip because it’s gone to complete shit. Even after all those terrible things he called me, I unlike him, hope nothing physically bad happens to him. That’s the difference between a dumb cunt and a real person.

Come and do Comedy in South Africa. We have this quiet little spot in the heart of Cape Town called the Armchair. Every so often, we have an audience versus comedian royal rumble on the makeshift little stage. Last man standing kind of vibe.. It gets intense and the next week, we are all back doing our sets and dealing with unruly audience members

Eww. I’m never going to patron the strip again.
How revolting. Shame on that club owner. I can’t imagine any comedian would go to a place where the owner is passively (and actively according to his reported tweets) encouraging violent acts towards the talent.
    Beyond repulsive.

If he would allow an audience member to heckle then jump on stage threatening a performer then imagine what he allows to take place among the audience.  Gotta admit I’ve never been to the strip but it sounds like a dive.

Amsterclam What’s that supposed to mean? What exactly did Jay do wrong here? This club owner was in the wrong completely. No security, lets hecklers do whatever they please and has no problem with them jumping on stage assaulting comics.

J Rosen  I’m sure Jay was frustrated with the security situation but trashing the club on stage is way out of line. Talk to the owner after the show. Hurting the club hurts other comics as well. And how long did the incident take? Fights happen quick. I’m not surprised Jay, who would be watching the stage, would get there before the bartenders and other staff who are busy with customers. Portraying them as “sitting on their hands” might not be quite accurate, I don’t know. No actual punches were thrown. No cell phone footage has appeared. That makes me think it happened fast.

You can believe the owner “has no problem” with customers jumping on stage and assaulting comics if you like. I don’t see any reason to believe that. To me it sounds like he can’t afford a bouncer anymore but still wants to stay open. Smaller crowds are a reality in a lot of comedy clubs these days. I don’t blame the owner for doing the best he can with the situation he has to work with. What I do blame him for is trying to keep Jay out of other clubs. That’s vindictive and unnecessary.

Amsterclam J Rosen im sure the owner had no problem with the customer assaulting the comic when he wrote jay saying “if there was a bouncer.l would have told him to leave the room and let the boyfriend beat the crap out of william.”

Binary Daoist I went to the Strip once on an NYC visit.  All I could think about was that this is the NYC comedy club that your mother warned you about.

High cover charge. Pretty much in line with other places, but considering the venue… Ouch.

The absolute cheapest beer in the joint was $10. Higher than the Cellar, Stand or Stand Up NY.  And light years higher than the Creek.

After the show was officially over, the club changed hosts and ran out open-mikers.  No announcement, no nothing… It was basically a contest to see how fast people could leave.  Nice to give these guys a shot, but it’s a strange thing to purposefully slowly walk the room.

It was fairly obvious that whoever was running the place didn’t really have a clue.

That club owner is a piece of garbage.

There isn’t one comedian in the business who isn’t completely behind Jay over this.

Except, maybe, some smart-ass LA liberal like Andy Kindler.
