SNL went musical last night with host/musical guest Ariana Grande in the house.  Grande got the chance to show off some musical impressions and the women of SNL got two chances to break into song Saturday night with a Sound of Music parody and a music video that wasn’t about feminism.

The Tidal sketch may not have made a lot of sense, but Ariana Grande got to show off an impressive array of musical impressions playing an intern for Jay-Z’s musical streaming company Tidal. When a power outage hits Tidal headquarters, shy intern Chloe is called up on to fill in for some of Tidal’s performers to keep their streams going. Ariana Grande is Chloe and shows off some impressive impressions of pop stars Britney Spears, Shakira, Rihanna, and Celine Dion, and then belts out a killer Whitney Houston to take it all home. Jay Pharoah wraps it all up revealing that he isn’t a actually a music tech named Mickelson, but Jay-Z in going full Undercover Boss. Keenan Thompson, Bobby Moynihan, and Sasheer Zamata play other Tidal techs dealing with the crisis.

Later Grande appeared in another musical sketch that shows off the vocal range of the SNL cast members — or at least the women of Saturday Night Live.

Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, Vanessa Bayer, Sasheer Zamata, and Kate McKinnon pull off the perfect parody of the Sound of Music song, “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria”, as senior nuns worried about young Maria.

But a very modern up to date Maria is listening and can’t believe this bullshit is going down.  Grande as Maria tells the nuns to stop throwing shade her way #wowwwwwwwwww. Yeah that phrase isn’t going away.

There was also a musical monologue, and the entire female cast make a music video that is not about feminism with Leslie Jones, Vanessa Bayer, Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, Vanessa Bayer, Sasheer Zamata, and Kate McKinnon.
