Tonight Tom Hanks returns to Saturday Night Live to host for the ninth time! Hanks is one of the elite members of the five timers club which started with just Hanks, Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon but grew to include Alec Baldwin, John Goodman, Christopher Walken, Drew Barrymore, Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck, Buck Henry, Chevy Chase, Danny Devito, Sting, Bill Murray, Ben Affleck, Candice Bergen and Tina Fey.
This will be Hanks’ first time hosting in over ten years; he last hosted SNL in May 2006. It’s been thirty-one years since Hanks first hosted in 1985, by the way. Hanks has an impressive list of famous sketches and characters he’s been a part of– enough in fact to earn him an SNL special- The Best of Tom Hanks. Some favorites include Mr. Short Term Memory, and as half of the “girl watchers” duo with Jon Lovitz.
A Tom Hanks episode always brings out the big guns in the musical guest department. In the past, Tom Hanks has hosted with musical guests like Keith Richards, Aerosmith, Springsteen and Tom Petty. Tonight he shares the 30 Rock stage with Lady Gaga.
Hanks is promoting the movie Inferno, part of the DaVinci Code series.
With a rare triple set of promos you know this is going to be an unforgettable episode. Watch Hanks say “Lorne says this time could be my big break”, with the world’s shortest retrospective of Hanks’ past SNL appearances in the first promo, below. In a second promo, Hanks pairs up with Leslie Jones sitting in a rooftop garden, sharing Mimosas and talking about some garden variety conversation topics. Like for example, what’s space is really like.
Saturday Night Live airs at 11:30pm tonight only on NBC.
