Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: October 30, 2021

Dedicated to the brilliant and beautiful Ernie Tripper

Saturday Night Live is not live tonight, but its a replay that’s very worthy of a re-watch. SNL is going back to its season premiere to re-air the episode hosted by Owen Wilson.  This is perfect timing because Wilson’s new movie, The French Dispatch is finally out all around the country, so this is a perfect reminder to get tickets and get out and see this beautiful work of art.  Wilson’s long running collaboration with Wes Anderson in movies Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, and The Grand Budapest Hotel and now The French Dispatch, has more than prepared him for absurdism, sketchwork, and just being all around hilarious and likeable. Wilson also starred in the Woody Allen romantic comedy Midnight in Paris, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, Peter Bogdanovich’s She’s Funny That Way, as well as iconic comedies Zoolander, Starsky & Hutch, Wedding Crashers and The Internship. Kids know him from family movies like Marly and Me, Night at the Museum, and voice work in Cars.

But back to tonight’s SNL episode…..

Wilson put his strong comedy pedigree to amazing use, with a terrific monologue about growing up in the Wilson family.  His brothers Luke and Andrew were in the audience to support.

Wilson’s episode is packed with great sketches, and digital shorts and phenomenal writing through and through.  One of the best segments of the night is digital short called Billionaires Star Trek. It features Owen as Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos as Captain of a penis ship, with a crew of nobodies (cameo by Luke Wilson), encountering Richard Branson, Elon Musk and other difficulties.  Another sketch took us inside a School Board Meeting with a long line of disruptive speakers,  Wilson later plays a director trying to film a commercial about mail-in stool testing kits who can’t get the performers to stop talking about playing with the stool. And Owen was spot on as a FOX NFL Sportscaster who, along with his broadcast partner (played by newcomer James Austin Johnson), constantly interrupts the action to talk about FOX’s new series, Crazy House.

The episode’s cold open features new castmember James Austin Johnson’s debut on the show as President Joe Biden talking about the infrastructure bill with support from Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (Cecily Strong), Sen. Joe Manchin (Aidy Bryant), Rep. Ilhan Omar (Ego Nwodim) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (Melissa Villaseñor), kicking off the start of a great season 47.

The audience was thrilled for the return of Weekend Update, where Michael Che and Colin Jost talked about infrastructure, Joe Rogan, R. the Kelly verdict, Disney turning 50, masturbating chimps, Eminem’s new pasta restaurant, Obama’s Presidential Library, unvaccinated NBA players, Billie Eilish, white paint, and more. And Weekend Update ends with a sweet tribute to one of the best to do it- Norm Macdonald, who passed away while the show was on hiatus.

Owen Wilson is joined by musical guest Kacey Musgraves.

The amazing comedy movie star Owen Wilson hosting Saturday Night Live’s Season 47 re-airing with musical guest Kacey Musgraves starts at 11:30pm et on NBC!
