Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: July 1, 2017

It’s summertime which means the cast and crew of SNL are off doing other projects, but NBC has you covered with reruns all summer from season 42. SNL Alum Kristin Wiig returned to host SNL earlier this season and you can catch a re-airing of that episode tonight at 11:30 on NBC. The episode initially aired on November 19th, 2016 soon after the election, but just before Thanksgiving.

Wiig, of course is a Saturday Night Live legend, who not only had an incredible run on the show with memorable characters and impressions like Gilly, Kathie Lee Gifford, Kate, Dooneese and Suze Orman.  Since leaving the series, her star has risen– she’s had roles in blockbuster movies and critically acclaimed independent films like The Martian, Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters, The Skeleton Twins, Welcome to Me, and more.

When SNL stars come back, you would expect a great episode because the host knows how the show works, but that isn’t always the case. Wiig proved she’s incapable of doing anything badly with a smash hit return.

It was an excellent episode with many highlights and special guests. Alec Baldwin showed up to play Trump as President for the first time (instead of a presidential candidate), Jason Sudeikis dropped in to play Mitt Romney, and Will Forte and Steve Martin made appearances during Wiig’s monologue.  There’s a great political digital short called “The Bubble” that makes fun of city liberal’s difficulty seeing past their own neighborhoods, and a great edition of Anderson Cooper 360 takes a West-Worldian look at the Trump win.

The funniest sketch of the night pairs Kristen Wiig with Kate McKinnon for a cat-based chat show, and game show “Secret Word” is another highlight, featuring Wiig playing a password-like game. Also, keep an eye out for Cecily Strong and Kristen Wiig co-starring in a sketch about friends competing to audition for a QVC show, that we’re still hoping can become a real series.

This episode came out during the height of the “Mannequin Challenge,” and you can watch the SNL crew get statuesque in the promo for the episode below.
