Wes Anderson, Louis CK, John Oliver Win At The WGA Awards

“The Grand Budapest Hotel” was a winner at the Writers Guild of America Awards on Saturday night. Writer and director Wes Anderson and Hugo Guinness won the award for Best Original Screenplay for the comedy about the adventures of a legendary concierge and his lobby boy at a luxury hotel in 1932.

Louis CK left the WGA Awards with two new trophies. He won for Best Comedy Series for “Louie” over fellow writing nominees for the shows “Orange Is the New Black”, “Silicon Valley”, “Transparent” and “Veep”. He also picked up the WGA Award for Best Episodic Comedy for the “Louie” episode, “So Did the Fat Lady” which guest starred Sarah Baker.

“Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver has won its first award ever for its first season of writing. It won the WGA Award for Best Comedy / Variety (including Talk) Series. Oliver won over his mentor Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” as well as incredible competition from “The Colbert Report”, “Inside Amy Schumer”, “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, “Saturday Night Live” and “Real Time with Bill Maher”.

The WGA Animation Award went to “The Simpsons” for “Brick Like Me” episode. “The Simpsons” had a really good chance at winning this. The FOX cartoon had 4 of the 6 nominations in this category while FOX’s “Bob’s Burgers” had the other two.

Congratulations to the husband and wife team of Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair who won a WGA Award in the Short Form New Media – Original category for an episode of their web series “High Maintenance”.

The Writers Guild of America Awards were held in two separate ceremonies going on at the same time with the West and the East factions of the Guild each having their own awards program. The WGA West ceremony was at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles while the WGA East held theirs at the Edison Ballroom in New York.

In L.A., Harold Ramis was honored with a WGA Laurel Award and in New York, Norman Lear was presented with an honorary award.
