Trailer Shows a Glimpse Inside Judd Apatow’s New Garry Shandling Doc

Garry Shandling was the most important mentor Judd Apatow had for 25 years. That’s how the trailer for Apatow’s new documentary about his pal Garry opens.

Shandling was a legend in comedy but according to even his closest friends, he was still a mystery to everyone who knew him. The trailer gives just a small glimpse at what is coming in the new four and a half hour, two-part documentary. We already know we can expect to see conversations with more than 40 friends and fellow comedians
including James L. Brooks, Sacha Baron Cohen, David Coulier, Jon Favreau, Jay Leno, Kevin Nealon, Conan O’Brien, Bob Saget, Jerry Seinfeld and Sarah Silverman. There’s also four decades’ worth of TV appearances, along with personal journals, private letters and candid home audio and video footage that reveal his brilliant mind and restless soul.

The trailer shows Gary’s friends talking about his eccentricities, his drive, and his needs. How he was always about topping himself with everything he did, and the pressure that put on him, and what fed his interest in spiritual practice. “He turned to buddism,” Sarah Silverman says in the preview, “but its not because he’s Zen. It’s because he was in desperate need of being Zen.”

Don’t miss the premiere of The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling March 26 at 5:00PM on HBO.
