Pre trial detainees kept in appalling conditions at Rikers Island are getting a combined total of $53 million. Over 4000 plaintiffs will each receive $400 per day spent at the facilities covered under the agreement. “People confined in the Covered Facilities were denied sufficient access to programming, recreation, a dayroom, natural light, freedom of movement, and psychological monitoring, among other deprivations,” the proposed settlement states.

According to legal documents, R. Kelly is appealing his federal conviction for sex crimes. Among other reasons, he alleged the government did not meet their burden of proof in the case.
