Thomas Middleditch is Inspired By Dour Germans
Thursday night on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Thomas Middleditch explained his instagram character, Friedrich. Friedrich is a German comedian that Middleditch invented for his Instagram. He plays Friedrich during down time while shooting his HBO hit series, Silicon Valley. Friedrich lies to play pranks, and does what he calls “observational prop comedy” and gets into all kinds of trouble.
The idea for Friedrich evolved after Thomas was listening to a college radio station that played a catchy song called Der Komputer Number Drie by a french singer who had a German hit in the 60’s. Middleditch liked the tune, and tried to find it on YouTube. He hunted down a clip (see below) and he was inspired by watching the “dour” men in the audience who remained stoic while the pretty pop singer performed for them.
