The media and Hollywood insiders have been debating whether the movie The Martian could really be considered a comedy for weeks now, (Leonard Maltin said no, our own Lesley Coffin said maybe) so when Matt Damon won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy, and the movie The Martian won the award for Best Motion Picture, Comedy, most of us just shrugged. But the rest of America that hadn’t been embroiled in the debate took to google running searches like “How is The Martian a comedy” and “why was the Martian considered a comedy.” The real shame of the decision was that two truly terrific comedic films that were absolutely definitely and positively comedies– Spy and Trainwreck— went unrecognized at the Golden Globes because The Martian took center stage.
Other comedy wins Sunday night included Jennifer Lawrence in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy category for the movie Joy, and got a one woman standing ovation from bestie Amy Schumer. Amazon grabbed a surprise win for new series Mozart in the Jungle for Best TV Series, Comedy. Mozart in the Jungle has some great talents attached to the series including creator Jason Schwartzman, Bernadette Peters, and the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Gael Garcia Bernal. Best Actress in a TV Series, Comedy went to Rachel Bloom who also recently made Forbes Hot 30 Under 30 List.
