The Filtered Excellence: September 29, 2011

Bob Geldof once asked us, Where is the filtered excellence!?  Its right here.  Here are this weeks picks of what to WATCH, what to DO what to TRY what to READ what to LISTEN TO and more:

*************

WATCH THIS:

Bill Cunningham New York:  now streaming on Netflix, this may be one  of the best documentaries of the year, in a year of great documentaries.  You can’t help but love Bill as you watch his life story, and his singular dedication to his work– chronicling the fashion and style of New York for the cities most prestigious newspaper- The New York Times.  He is a true individual with a great story that is told beautifully.  We love Bill Cunningham and you will too.

Dexter Season 6:  the season premiers this Sunday Oct 1 on Showtime at 9pm.  Over the years Dexter has ranged from intriguing to exciting to over the top, to sometimes downright silly, but we’re always ready to dive into another Season following our favorite serial killer.

READ THIS

Freedom, by Jonathan Franzen:  is now available in paperback and we’re loving it.  Its not a quick and easy book, but it draws you in quickly and you will not want to put it down as you follow the various members of Berglund family throughout several decades.  This novel praised as a masterpiece by critics earned Frazen the honor of being the first living novelist to appear on the cover of Time Magazine in over ten years.

Rock Seen, by Bob Gruen: is a fantastic new photography book filled with over 40 years worth of gorgeous and iconic rock n roll photography.  If you don’t know Gruen, you know his work.  His most famous photograph, a photo of John Lennon in sleeveless New York tshirt is among the over 500 beautiful 10×12 photographs.

DO THIS

Elvis Costello and The Imposters: will be making a stop at the beautiful United Palace in New York this Saturday night, October 1st.  They will be bringing back the Spectacular Spinning Songbook so you don’t know what, or who, you’ll hear.  The tour continues to NJ and W.Va. before heading off to Europe.

Tight Spot by David Byrne: is a temporary sculptural exhibition that has squeezed in below the newly built Highline Park in New York City.  If you’re in the area, come see, hear and touch this giant inflatable globe envisioned by the former Talking Heads frontman.

TRY THIS

Ben & Jerry’s Schweddy Balls:  We swear it tastes better than it sounds.  The rum flavored vanilla ice cream base is loaded with  fudge covered rum and milk chocolate malt balls and is a nod to an SNL character played by Alec Baldwin.
