Amazon today announced its brand-new original dramatic series, Mad Dogs, a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, is scheduled to premiere on Friday, January 22 on Prime Video. The series stars Steve Zahn, Michael Imperioli, Billy Zane, Romany Malco and Ben Chaplin. Amazon Prime members who watched the series pilot when it first premiered in January have been anxiously awaiting the return of the series since they found out it got the green light last February.

The series pilot is tense and compelling, following a group of friends who visit their rich successful buddy in Belize and can’t believe his home, his life and success until things take a turn toward dark-as-fuck. The weekend ends in murder, and this group of very fish-out-of-water buddies are trapped in another country, on another continent, without any Belize street-sense. It’s more dark than comedy, but in the spirit of series like The Sopranos, or movies like Goodfellas (both not coincidentally involving series star Michael Imperioli), there’s enough comedy here to squeeze into the genre. The pilot cliffhanger has us ready to binge watch the entire season as soon as it becomes available January 22nd, about a year after seeing the pilot episode.

“Mad Dogs explores what happens when four college friends go on an exotic vacation that shockingly descends into a harrowing roller coaster that tests their mettle, their friendships and their very sense of identity,” said Roy Price, Vice President, Amazon Studios. “The show has a fantastic cast and is led by Shawn Ryan. We look forward to customers’ reactions.”

“I loved working on a comedic, albeit dark, story like Mad Dogs and know that the performances by Steve, Michael, Romany and Ben will resonate with all who have had longtime friendships that evolve and change as the years go on,” says Executive Producer Shawn Ryan.

Last year’s Golden Globe winner for Best TV Comedy came out of Amazon Pilot Season and Mad Dogs could definitely follow suit.
