The 14th annual Tribeca Film Festival in Manhattan will open with a documentary about another New York City institution, Saturday Night Live. The festival kicks off on Wednesday, April 15th with a screening of “Live From New York!”. The documentary follows the beginning of the late night comedy-variety show now celebrating its 40th season from its experimental beginnings to becoming an iconic television series. “Live From New York!” features archive footage of the early days plus behind-the-scenes videos along with interviews from some SNL greats, hosts, writers, crew and also journalists and others who were inspired by Saturday Night Live.

SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels said “After 40 years, the timing just felt right”. Robert De Niro who co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival was thrilled about the opening day selection. He said, “The selection of ‘Live from New York!’ to open the 14th Tribeca Film Festival is personally gratifying to me on several levels. Having hosted SNL three times, and guested on several occasions, I speak from a first-hand experience about “SNL’s” rightful place in our culture as well as a welcome addition to our Festival.”

“Live From New York!” is directed by Bao Nguyen. Tickets go on sale for the Tribeca Film Festival opening night gala on March 23rd at TribecaFilm.com. The festival runs from Wednesday, April 15th through April 26th.
