Showtime’s Stand-Up Drama Will Debut at SXSW

Last month, we learned that Showtime had announced a release date for their new period drama about the 1970’s comedy scene called I’m Dying Up Here. The trailer that was released with the announcement did a great job of setting up the show’s universe.

Now, Showtime and SXSW have announced that they will be teaming up next month to premiere the show at the SXSW Comedy festival. On Wednesday, March 15th at 11:30 a.m. at Austin’s Paramount Theatre, Showtime will present the world premiere of I’m Dying Up Here’s first episode. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with show stars Al Madrigal (The Daily Show), Erik Griffin (Workaholics), Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Ari Graynor (Bad Teacher), and Andrew Santino (Mixology). What’s more, to compliment the screening and Q&A, Showtime will be throwing a themed party at Clive Bar that will feature a 70’s themed musical setlist from acts like The Relationship, the Wild Reeds, Bleached, and none other than the legendary DJ Grandmaster Flash.

I’m Dying Up Here is set in Los Angeles’ infamous 1970’s comedy scene and examines the various characters, from the brilliant to the unstable, who attempt to make it big in the industry. The show centers around a club run by a woman named Goldie, who sounds awfully similar to The Comedy Store’s famed gatekeeper, Mitzi Shore. Melissa Leo plays Goldie, who acts as a mentor of sorts to the various comics who come through her establishment, comics played by folks such as Alfred Molina (Chocolat), Stephen Guarino (Happy Endings), Jon Daly (Kroll Show), Cathy Moriarty (Raging Bull), Sebastian Stan (Captain America), Robert Forster (Jackie Brown), Brianne Howey (Horrible Bosses 2) and more.

In the meantime, if you haven’t seen the trailer for the show, do yourself a favor and check it out; We stand by our declaration that this is one of our most anticipated shows of 2017!
