See An Animated Version Of “The Grand Budapest Hotel”

If you would like to see how Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” would possibly look like as a cartoon, you can from the animated videos used by the production design team on the film. Production designer Adam Stockhausen and set decorator Anna Pinnock used “animatics”, animated sequences that take the place of storyboards to set up the shots. Some of the scenes in “Grand Budapest” were so intricate that the animatics helped immensely with the actual filming. The animated scenes not only allowed Wes Anderson and cinematographer Robert Yeoman to set up the shots but also pre-plan the camera movements for each scene of the movie.

In these animatic videos provided by The Wrap, you can see the animated sequence side-by-side with the actual scene from the movie to show exactly how much preparation went into “Grand Budapest” before it was even shot. The first video shows how the hotel shoot out scene was put together in advance featuring Adrian Brody as Dmitri Desgoffe und Taxis as he’s after Monsieur Gustave H. and the shooting begins.

The second animatic scene has a animated Jeff Goldblum as Deputy Vilmos Kovacs as he reads Madame D’s will. You can see how the crowd shots and Gustave H’s entrance was were set up for the cameras.

Wes Anderson along with Robert Yeoman and Adam Stockhausen with Anna Pinnock have all been nominated for Academy Awards this year for their work on “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.
