Sarah Silverman Shares Tits to Make a Great Point

Sarah Silverman proudly bared her boobies on Twitter this week to make a point.  She posted a photo of her topless in front of her bathroom mirror to point out the ridiculousness of Instagram’s nipple ban.

Silverman attempted to post the non-sexualized photo on Instagram, but says it was removed on the grounds of obscenity. She wrote, “Unsexualized women’s breasts r obscene. If they’re oiled up & smashed down by, say, sexy suspenders covering just the nipples, that’s not obscene. That’s sexy! To recap: women’s breasts=obscene men’s breasts=not obscene.”

To further make a point, she posted the same photo on Instagram with the nipples scribbled out, alongside a photo of a topless man with large breasts. It was not blocked, censored or otherwise prohibited.

For those in the dark about this pernicious policy, Instagram censors (i.e. removing) photos of women’s bare breasts, if the nipple is showing- a policy that has long irked forward thinking feminists, and nipple happy men.  The official Insta-policy is “we don’t allow nudity.” They elaborate:  “This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks. It also includes some photos of female nipples, but photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding are allowed. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too.”

Challenges to the Instagram policy have been ongoing, with many female comedians participating in the debate. Chelsea Handler has been one of the most vocal opponents to the policy.  Artist Spencer Tunick is doing something about this- he’s sick of his artistic photos of hundreds of nude people being banned from the platform.  He’s bringing a few hundred people to New York City on June 2nd to pose naked specifically in protest of the policy in a project called #WeTheNipple

The campaign to free the nipple on Instagram rages on.
