Roseanne: “Tell Your Kids They’re Not Smart and They Have No Talent”
Comedy legend Roseanne Barr was at the SiriusXM studios last week to tape an episode of “Unmasked” hosted by Ron Bennington with a live studio audience. She talked about her fast rise in Hollywood, her decision to withdraw herself as the Green Party candidate for the Presidential race, and medical marijuana. She also had some advice for parents that runs counter to today’s overly nurturing culture: Tell your kids the truth.
“That kid isn’t cute. You should tell them that. They’re not cute. They’re not smart and they have no talent. You’re doing them a favor.”
And she’s speaking from experience. She explained to Bennington, that her mother and grandmother used to tell her she was pretty. “They told me I was gorgeous and stunning.” She continued, “then you go out in the real world and there’s quite a wake up call and disappointment.” They also told her she could sing, which may have been a mistake considering her performance of the national anthem in 1990 changed her entire life. “It was going from being a beloved person to a despised and hated person literally overnight. By the time I got home from the baseball thing – I was on a private jet owned by the Padres and as I boarded the jet, they said don’t worry about a thing. We’ve got your back and by the time I landed they said we have no idea how she got on the flight. We have no idea how she did – she got passed all our guards. We tried to stop her.” (listen to a clip here)
The response to her performance, including death threats changed everything. ” The death threats and the stuff that I got and then I was like I’ve got to get the fuck out of here. I hired LAPD to stand on top of my house with assault rifles for weeks. At the threats that a free and brave nation made at me.” (listen to the clip here)
