Ronnie Spector on HBO’s ‘Phil Spector’: “I Won’t Be Watching That Movie”

ronnie spectorRonnie Spector– who is still as vibrant and wonderful as ever– stopped in to the Ron and Fez Show at SiriusXM today to talk to Ron Bennington about the a new SiriusXM show “Girls Room” which will be playing all the great girl groups, like “The Shirelles”, “The Supremes” and “The Marvelettes.”  While they were talking, the subject of the new HBO biopic, “Phil Spector” came up.

Ronnie doesn’t talk about her relationship with Phil often, preferring to put it behind her, but she was sent a screener of the movie to preview:

“I mean everybody knows about my husband’s HBO…my ex-husband’s HBO movie.  They sent it to me and I was going to watch it.  Then, I found out that I was in it and I was like -aaahhhh!”

But she decided not to watch it and when it premieres on Sunday, she won’t be watching then either.  “Al Pacino – and Helen Mirren is one of his women lawyers.  And every time he hears my name, he goes into a rage. ….And I am not going to see that movie,” Ronnie said.

Her husband, Jonathan Greenfield, did watch it.  “What did I think about the movie?,” he said.  “I’m not the person to ask.  They had what?  Four songs in and two of them were Ronnie’s.  I understand why she doesn’t want to see it because she knows the reality. ”

Ronnie also talked about her one woman show, “Beyond the Behive” which returns to the City Winery on May 6th and 7th.  Ronnie gave us a little preview of the show:

“I come out.  I sing before I come on.  (singing) It’s like a dream come true.  And then I come on.  I talk a little bit about my beginning – Spanish Harlem and all that, growing up in Spanish Harlem.  And my father’s white and my mother’s black.  And then I start talking and then I sing.  Every time I do a sentence, then I sing about it. “

The show of course, also touches on the difficult emotions she went through in her career and her personal life married to Phil Spector.   “Well….most of the time, especially in the 60’s and if you were a woman and if you were married to a genius man with millions – you went right down the tubes.  But, I couldn’t do that.  I loved the guy, but I couldn’t stay married because I wasn’t able to perform. ”

The Girls’ Room airs beginning Friday, March 22 at 3 pm ET and will run through Monday, March 25 at 3 am ET on SiriusXM channel 17.   You can get tour dates and details for “Beyond the Beehive” at ronniespector.com.
