Rob Riggle Went From Afghanistan To Saturday Night Live

The journey between being on active duty in Afghanistan and being a featured player on Saturday Night Live was a lot shorter than people would expect for Rob Riggle. On the Late Show, Rob talked about first arriving in Afghanistan just 3 months after the 9-11 attacks. He was part of the Marine Corp and was dropped off in the still Taliban controlled country by a C-130 that never stopped on the runway of a bombed-out airfield.

He told David Letterman about the fear of being left in the dark in a terrorist country, but also how beautiful the sky was that night. Along the way of his military career, Rob Riggle kept thinking about trying comedy. Between two tours in Afghanistan and assignments in Kosovo and Albania, he kept working on his comedy. And just a year out of getting out of Afghanistan, he landed Saturday Night Live as a featured cast member. His time at SNL lasted one season, but it was his first paying job in comedy.

Now he’s appearing in “Dumb and Dumber To” with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, which he describes as the same kind of fear as being left in Afghanistan.
