PETA Sues To Stop Dropping Opie on New Years Eve

possum dropNew Year’s Eve isn’t going to be the same this year in the town of Brasstown, North Carolina – population 240. This is the first time in 20 years that Clay Logan won’t be dropping a live possum in a plexiglass box off the top of his convenience store at midnight to ring in the new year. He’s facing a lawsuit from PETA and will use either some roadkill or a pot of possum stew to welcome 2015.

For two decades, Logan’s used a live animal to add to the town’s new year’s celebration which includes a drag contest to name “Miss Possum” and also taking the live creature selected each year (known as ‘Old Possum’) to do lectures on not smoking weed at the school. Brasstown is one of those politically anomalies. Conservative on marijuana while quite liberal on animals being dropped from roof tops.

Last year’s possum, Opie, appeared unharmed but it has been argued that the stress of the event causes the possum to die shortly after New Years.
