Patton Oswalt Teaches You How to Watch Star Wars

Patton Oswalt wrote a book, about his love movies and the influence movies have had on his life.  Patton is what you might call a fan of Star Wars.  A really big fan. Last night he was a guest on the Seth Meyers program, and recommended that the audience use “The Machete Order” to enjoy the Star Wars movies.  He explained the Machete Order for those of us in the dark about this important viewing technique.  Now you’ll need two alerts before reading further–  a spoiler alert, and a giant nerdiness alert. Here goes.

Patton explained, first you watch Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back.  When Empire Strikes Back ends with the cliffhanger that Darth is Luke’s dad, you make a leap.  Don’t watch Return of the Jedi just yet.  Save that, and go watch Episode 2, Attack of the Clones.  Do not watch Episode 1, it doesn’t exist. Burn it, throw it away, it never happened. Now, watch Episode 2, with Darth as a teenager, basically going through Luke’s struggle but falling into evil instead of good.  Then you watch Episode 3.  At the end of three, he’s become Darth Vadar.  NOW you can go to episode six, which is of course, Return of the Jedi, and it becomes what Patton has called “an amazing journey.”

Patton has been nominated for a Grammy this year, but as he told Seth, he’s campaigning for Weird Al to win.  So vote with your head, not over it.  Or something.
