Oscars Nominations Announced! “Birdman” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” Up For Best Picture

The nominees were announced Thursday for the 2015 Oscars.

For Best Motion Picture, two comedies are among the eight nominees. “Birdman” and Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” are nominated for top film of the year. Along with “Boyhood”, “Selma”, “The Theory of Everything”, “The Imitation Game”, “American Sniper” and “Whiplash”.

In no surprise, “Birdman” brought in the nominations. Michael Keaton was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in Motion Picture. But also, Steve Carell will now be known as “Academy Award nominee Steve Carell”. He was nominated for “Foxcatcher”. The other nominees in the category are Eddie Redmayne, “The Theory of Everything”, Benedict Cumberbatch, “The Imitation Game”, Bradley Cooper, “American Sniper”.

As for Best Performance by an Actress in Motion Picture, the nominees are Julianne Moore, “Still Alice”, Felicity Jones, “The Theory of Everything”, Rosamund Pike, “Gone Girl”, Reese Witherspoon, “Wild” and Marion Cotillard, “Two Days One Night”.

The Best Director nominations saw more love for “The Grand Budapest Hotel”. Wes Anderson was nominated for Best Director. It’s his first directing nomination. Also nominated were Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for “Birdman”. The other directing nominees include Richard Linklater for “Boyhood”, Morten Tyldum for “The Imitation Game” and Bennett Miller, for“Foxcatcher”.

Edward Norton received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Birdman”. He’s facing competition from Robert Duvall, “The Judge”, Mark Ruffalo, “Foxcatcher”, Ethan Hawke, “Boyhood” and J.K. Simmons , “Whiplash”.

Comedy was also represented by “Birdman” in the Best Supporting Actress category by Emma Stone was nominate for her role in the film. Other nominees include Meryl Streep, “Into The Woods”, Patricia Arquette, “Boyhood”, Laura Dern, “Wild” and Keira Knightly, “The Imitation Game”.

The Best Original Screenplay nominees are Wes Anderson and Hugo Guinness, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Richard Linklater, “Boyhood”, Dan Gilroy, “Nightcrawler” and E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, “Foxcatcher”

Best Adapted Screenplay nominations brought in a nod for Paul Thomas Anderson’s crime comedy drama “Inherent Vice”. He’s up against Graham Moore, “The Imitation Game”, Damien Chazelle, “Whiplash”, Anthony McCarten, “The Theory of Everything” and Jason Hall, “American Sniper”

The 87th annual Academy Awards will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and  presented on Sunday, February 22nd with coverage starting at 7pm et on ABC.
