Obama Goes Full Key & Peele At White House Correspondents Dinner
President Obama borrowed a Key & Peele sketch for the 2015 White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday night. He also borrowed Key & Peele’s Keegan-Michael Key for his monologue. Key reprised his role as Luther, the Presidential Anger Translator at the black tie event meant to both celebrate and lampoon the President and his relationship with the White House Press Corp.
The DC audience at the $300 a ticket party must be familiar with the Comedy Central show, because they popped as the President introduced Luther who translates the President’s remarks into what the Commander-in-Chief is really thinking deep down inside. At the start, Luther warned the crowd to “hold on to your lily-white butts.” He then gave the “angry” translation on things the President was talking about including CNN’s non-stop Ebola coverage and climate change. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was also compared to HBO’s “Game of Thrones”. At one point, Obama even took over for his own Anger Translator. Watch for Luther’s remark to the First Lady on his way out.
The Key & Peele moment wrapped up President Obama’s comedy act for the night. Before Keegan-Michael Key came out, the President whipped through some one-liners and brutal put downs of some of the major players of the beltway. His line of the night was a shot at his predecessors in the White House and who was really running that administration. President Obama said, “Dick Cheney says he thinks I’m the worst president of his lifetime, which is interesting because I think Dick Cheney is the worst president of my lifetime. What a coincidence!”
Some of the President’s other targets at the WHCD included Joe Biden, Mike Huckabee, Michelle Bachmann, John McCain, Ted Cruz, Rick Santorum, Martin O’Malley, CNN, MSNBC and once again Donald Trump did not go unnoticed. President Obama also joked about about being a Muslim, a pot smoker and a socialist.
