There’s been plenty of speculation and criticism over Eddie Murphy’s appearance on SNL 40: Saturday Night Live’s 40th Anniversary Special. After an introduction by Chris Rock, Eddie made a very brief appearance on stage thanking everyone and saying how good it was to be back. He then threw it to commercials.

According to former SNL cast member, Norm Macdonald who was part of the SNL 40 special, it was planned for Eddie Murphy to have a more significant comedic role in the show. Norm tweeted that in the special’s “Celebrity Jeopardy” sketch which brought back Will Ferrell as host Alex Trebek and other previous SNL celebrity impressions, Eddie Murphy was scheduled to play Bill Cosby in a Video Daily Double bit. Eddie turned down the gag and current cast member Kenan Thompson put on the multi-colored Cosby sweater and did the impression.

Murphy said he would not kick a man when he’s down even though he knew the bit would kill.

Norm Macdonald takes everyone through what exactly happened at SNL 40 with Eddie Murphy refusing to do the Cosby impression in a series of tweets.
