Netflix Announces New 90’s High School Dramedy ‘Everything Sucks!’

Not much is known about the project thus far, but Netflix has announced that they’ve got a new half-hour dramedy series called Everything Sucks! coming to the platform. The retro coming-of-age series, which was just given a ten-episode order, will take place in Oregon in 1996, telling the story of a high school’s AV club and drama club whose worlds collide. The show will star Jahi Winston (The New Edition Story) and Peyton Kennedy (The Captive, American Fable) as the two lead child stars, with Claudine Nako (Grimm) and Patch Darragh (Sully, Boardwalk Empire) playing their parents, respectively. Some of the other students will be played by actors such as Elijah Stevenson (Second Nature), Sydney Sweeney (Emaline), Quinn Liebling (Tyler) and Rio Mangini (Teen Wolf).

The series was created by writers Ben York Jones (Like Crazy, Newness) and Michael Mohan (Pink Grapefruit); the former is known for his dramas, while the latter has had a hand in various rom-coms and dramedys, so the show is looking to be a serious look at the pains of growing up, with some levity sprinkled in for good measure.

On that note, here’s what Mohan and Jones had to say of the new series: “Some of our favorite shows of all time — The Wonder Years, Happy Days, That 70s Show, Freaks and Geeks — looked back at bygone eras with 20 years of hindsight. We think this is a great time to take a look back at high school and relive the fashion, music, and attitudes of the mid-’90’s the way we remember it. Not sensationalized, not watered down; but desperate, heartfelt, awkward, and exciting.”
