Mindy Kaling “Late Night” Film Sets Sundance Record

Mindy Kaling just debuted her first film that she both wrote and starred in at Sundance and set a new record.  Titled “Late Night” the film’s US distribution rights were bought for a record setting $13 million. Amazon studios made the grab for the film which is directed by Nisha Ganatra.

“Late Night” stars Emma Thompson as Catherine Newberry, an ascerbic old school British late night host on US television who helms a long reigning show called “Tonight.” According to those who have seen the film, Thompson’s character is not a fan of the new wave of YouTube celebs, doesn’t do political jokes, and avoids social media, which means she’s not adjusting well to 2019. She’s also old school in her writers room- an all male posse, and when she’s accused of being a misogynist, she challenges her team to find a female writer that’s “worth keeping.”  Enter Kaling as Molly Patel, an Indian-American with zero experience but a lot of enthusiasm who just might save the show when the network considers replacing Newberry with someone younger.

Spoiler alert, Emma Thompson performs stand up New Yorks Theater 80!

John Early, Ike Barinholtz, Hugh Dancy, Amy Ryan and John Lithgow costar.
