Mickey Rooney (1920 – 2014)

mickey-rooney-getty2-3Film legend Mickey Rooney has died at age 93. He started in show business at 17 months old as part of his parent’s vaudeville act and went on to become one of the popular child stars of all time. In 1937, he starred in the movie “A Family Affair” which launched a series of nearly 20 “Andy Hardy” films where he worked with Judy Garland. Those films defined his legacy as a movie star. He continued to work with Garland in a successful musicals like “Babes in Arms”, “Strike up the Band”, “Babes on Broadway” and Girl Crazy. Mickey Rooney also worked with a young Elizabeth Taylor in the film, “National Velvet” in 1944. He was still working in films this year.

Throughout his career, Rooney was nominated for 4 Academy Awards including a nod for his performance in 1980’s “Black Stallion”. He was also awarded a Juvenile Oscar (1939) and an Honorary Oscar in 1983.
