Last Comic Standing: Shelby Wright Picks Who to Watch (So Far)

Last Comic Standing

The second week of Last Comic Standing is behind us and seven more people are moving on to the semi-finals. Here are my picks for the stand outs and who form last night to keep your eye on looking ahead to the next round.  Comics Moving On This Week: Chloe Hilliard, Alingon Mitra, Zainab Johnson, DC Benny, Emily Galati, Rocky LaPorte, Gerald Kelly.

WHO TO WATCH:

Zainab Johnson@zainabjohnson– Johnson had a standout set in more ways than one. She didn’t let her height, baldness, or outfit distract the audience by doing a set that touched on none of them. This should help her moving on to the next round since several comics that have already moved on have done sets that immediately pointed out any of their standout physicality which could get stale as the competition moves on. Johnson owned the stage as well as the judges which made her one of the nights stand outs.

WHO TO WATCH:

DC Benny@dcbenny– The veteran comic showed that he belongs in the competition with a strong set that dealt with his acting career and being typecast. Benny is another Last Comic Standing example of a person that fans of comedy have probably seen before which will help him moving forward in the competition and an already polished set and repertoire doesn’t hurt either.

WHO TO WATCH:

Emily Galati@emilygalati– From a writing standpoint, Galati had the set of the night, with a smart bit about the state of Arizona that touched on the elderly and sometimes racist people that reside there. Galati is a very young comic but the witty set made us want to see what else she’s got to offer which, luckily, we will get to see since she punched her ticket to the semi-finals.

WHO TO WATCH:

Rocky LaPorte@RockyLaPorte– Rocky LaPorte could be the most experienced comedian that the show has ever seen, with 26 years on the road as a stand-up. LaPorte had no trouble diving into his set and impressed the judges with a well-versed and dry set. LaPorte no doubt has the material to move him far in the show, but I think his laid-back demeanor could hurt hurt him in a show where you have to bring your ‘A’ game every single week.

WHO SHOULD HAVE MADE IT

Randy Liedtke@randy_liedtke– One of the surprising snubs of the night was lumberjack look-alike Randy Liedtke, who had one of the strongest overall sets of the night. Liedtke is known for his offbeat antics off the stage and performed a different type of set that the judges and audience seemed to enjoy a lot. Thankfully, this definitely isn’t the last time we will hear from Liedtke.
