Larry David Steals An Otherwise Uneventful Trump Hosted Saturday Night Live

Last night people all over America tuned in to Saturday Night Live to see what would happen when Trump took the stage (in fact Variety reported that it was the highest rated SNL episode since Charles Barkley hosted four years ago). Would he get heckled? Would he be funny? Would Trump get back in the chicken suit reprising the funniest sketch from his 2004 turn as host?  Would there be audience disruptions?  Groups gathered outside protesting Trump’s appearance on Saturday Night Live, after marching over from Trump Tower, and a group Deport Racism offered $5,000 to any audience member who got off a heckle during one of Trump’s performances, and everyone was watching live to see what would happen.

The answer is nothing happened, unless you count Larry David’s heckle calling Trump a racist during the monologue. Trump himself only got about 10 minutes screen time during the episode and none of the Trump sketches lived up the House of Wings sketch. There were some strong moments on last night’s SNL but none of them involved the Don.

Most of Trump’s time on the show was stiffer than his last appearance, and not really as fun. Trump seemed more interested at poking fun at his tendency to over-inflate his own greatness and most of that came off as Trump taking another chance to say he’s great. He didn’t nae nae, but he did Drake, with many media outlets calling his brief cameo in the Drake parody video his best moment of the night. Eh.

Trump’s monologue also included a triple Trump appearance courtesy of Taran Killam and Darrell Hammond that didn’t really go anywhere, but Trump’s monologue was rescued from ‘meh’-ville by a fake heckle by Larry David calling him a racist.  Can we just get Larry David added to the 2015 cast?

The Trump stuff was mostly much ado about nothing and who cares either way, but there were some killer non-Trump moments last night, scroll past the Trump videos to check them out.

. . .

The stand out sketch last night was the cold open, with a hilarious Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton another epic appearance from Larry David as Bernie Sanders. Two other great moments from last night’s episode came during weekend update.

Leslie Jones delivered a rant on gender roles that was so funny we couldn’t even begin to pick our favorite line, and putting up Bobby Moynihan’s Drunk Uncle as Trump’s number one fan proves that putting Trump on a late night comedy show is not an endorsement of his candidacy or his policies.

And hey, someone owes Larry David $5,000.
