Katt Williams, Tiffany Haddish, Take Home Early Emmys

Emmy Season has officially begun with last night’s 2018 Creative Arts Awards, part one. The Creative Arts Awards are given prior to the PrimeTime Emmy telecast with most of the categories awarded for technical excellence- editing, sound, casting, music, and it’s also when the coveted Outstanding Guest Performers in a Comedy Series are awarded.

The Outstanding Guest Performer awards typically go to whoever was the strongest SNL celebrity guest host in the prior year- this year Tiffany Haddish grabbed that honor, adding to her incredible year of gigantic accolades and accomplishments. Haddish beat out fellow nominees Molly Shannon, Jane Lynch, Maya Rudolph, Wanda Sykes and Tina Fey for the guest performer award for their performances in Will and Grace, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Judge Jen, black-ish, and SNL respectively.

Outstanding Guest Actor went outside of SNL this year, with Katt Williams bringing home the award for his appearance in the critically lauded series Atlanta. He played Willy in the episode Alligator Man. Williams beat out some impressive competition including Sterling K. Brown, Bryan Cranston, Lin Manuel Miranda, Bill Hader, and Atlanta creator Donald Glover. They were nominated for appearances in Brooklyn Nine Nine, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Saturday Night Live.

The other big Creative Emmy Award (that we don’t really get why it isn’t in the PrimeTime category) for Outstanding Animated Program went to Rick and Morty creators for the episode “Pickle Rick”. Rick and Morty beat out some stiff competition including episodes of Bobs Burgers, South Park, The Simpsons and Big Hero 6: The Series.

Other awards went to Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which took home three CA Emmys, Atlanta which in addition to the guest role Emmy took the categories for Outstanding Cinematography For A Single-Camera Series and Outstanding Sound Editing bringing Atlanta to a 2018 preliminary total of three Emmys, Netflix’s GLOW took two awards including one for stunt coordination and production design. James Corden won two awards for “James Corden’s Next James Corden” including Outstanding Short Form Comedy and Best Actor in an Outstanding Short Form Comedy. Will & Grace also took two CA Emmys for technical categories. Single awards went to Alex Borstein for outstanding voice over performance for Family Guy, HBO’s Barry, and Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken.

The Creative Arts Awards take place over two nights, with part two taking place tonight. You can watch an edited replay of this year’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards on FXX, Saturday, September 15 at 8:00 PM ET/PT, to pregame for the Prime Time Emmys which will air on Sunday September 16th on NBC hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost.
