Josh Wolf Late Night Talk Show + Billy Ray Cyrus Sitcom Coming to CMT

CMT is known for its country programming, including music videos, reality shows like “Party Down South” and “Swamp Pawn” and “Dukes of Hazzard” reruns. The channel is looking to add some more comedy to its programming, so Billy Ray Cyrus is joining CMT with a new sitcom, “Still the King.”

According to Variety, Cyrus will play “Burning Vernon” Brown, a country music singer who had one hit and now is working as an Elvis impersonator. That’s until he crashes into a church in Nashville while drunk driving. He’s sentenced to do community service at the church and convinces the congregation that he’s their new Pastor. Confusing? Not to Billy Ray. He pitched the idea, and CMT President Brian Philips said the show is “truly the brainchild of Billy Ray Cyrus”.

The show will be following the example set by the “Tonight Show” according to CMT’s Executive Vice-President of Development Jayson Dinsmore. He said, “We are big fans of what Jimmy Fallon has done in late night. He has really turned that show into an opportunity to push things out virally.” Although he added Josh Wolf’s show “is much more of an interactive experience.”

No time frame was mentioned on when these new comedies would premiere on CMT.
