John Oliver’s “The Mittens Of Disapproval Are On” Airs In Trinidad & Tobago

In case you haven’t heard, the United States has been swinging the mighty hammer of American justice at corruption in FIFA, soccer’s international governing body. Among those in the crosshairs is Jack Warner, former head of the Trinidad & Tobago FA, who’s been accused of everything from facilitating bribes for World Cup votes to pocketing cash from a Haitian earthquake relief fund. After releasing a Facebook video where he used an Onion article as evidence of American corruption, Warner purchased seven minutes of time on local station TV6 for a special called “The Gloves Are Off.” There, he promised to release documents and expose all of FIFA’s corruption if he goes down. HBO’s John Oliver saw this and remarked how easy it is to basically buy airtime to say whatever you want, and announced on “Last Week Tonight” he had purchased five minutes for a message to Jack Warner.

It’s a great joke, right? Except he actually did. At 9 o’clock Tuesday night, viewers in the Caribbean country saw a certainly much-anticipated episode of “Mike & Molly” pre-emptied for “The Mittens Of Disapproval Are On,” Oliver’s response to Warner’s “The Gloves Are Off.” The lifelong Kopite’s message was clear: please release every document you have and do it now. “And if, one day, you end up in jail and you’re staring up at the ceiling, wouldn’t you feel better to know that you took down some people with you?”
