John Oliver (and Jeff Goldblum) Look at Cops Taking Your Cash on Last Week Tonight

Last night, Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver took a hilarious look at the very real issue of civil forfeiture in the US. With civil forfeiture, the government can take your property without a court hearing or any other hearing– especially cash. In civil forfeiture, the law is actually suing your property– not you. So your rights won’t apply in the case of the United States vs about $8,800 in US Currency.

A Tennessee police officer asking (at about 5:20) “Tenny Mucho Mucho Dinero in Su Trucky Trailer” to a driver he had pulled over is as funny as it is depression and sad.

Oliver proposes restructuring our civil forfeiture laws, but if we can’t do that, we should at least re-structure our cop dramas to be in line with what is happening in civil forfeiture, so with the help of Jeff Golblum, get ready for “Law and Order: Civil Asset Forfeiture Unit.”

Skip to 14:15 to watch Goldblum in action.
