John Oliver and Stephen Colbert Weigh In on Trevor Noah’s Debut

john oliver stephen colbert trevor noah debut

Wednesday night Stephen Colbert brought John Oliver on as a guest and they disagreed about a lot of things. Coffee, tea, taxation representation, Trump, whether to care about the election. Oliver did some quick math and figured out that the election is still a year away, so he insists he doesn’t care about Trump and he doesn’t give a shit about the election…yet.

But one thing Colbert and Oliver agreed on is that they both miss Jon Stewart. Stewart gave both Oliver and Colbert their break out roles, as correspondents on The Daily Show, and now they both host their own shows, with Colbert on his second. Colbert signed on with the Daily Show in 1998, and it was on the Daily Show that he developed his infamous character, Stephen Colbert, and won three Emmys for outstanding writing. He and Oliver never officially crossed paths, as by the time Oliver joined in 2006, Colbert had already left to start The Colbert Report. During the Summer of 2013, Oliver hosted the Daily Show while Jon was working on his movie.

So with all of this background and history with The Daily Show, what did they think of Trevor Noah’s debut? Well mostly they miss Jon Stewart, but Colbert thinks Trevor “crushed” his Daily Show hosting debut.

Colbert asked Oliver, “Do you miss Jon Stewart as much as I do?” Oliver said that yes, he missed him hugely and loves him. Both agreed Stewart’s replacement Trevor Noah did a great job, with Colbert saying he he thought Trevor “crushed it” but Oliver, who filled in for Stewart for eight weeks as host, seemed to shy away from giving a giant compliment (or criticism), instead saying he thinks Noah took on the “impossible task of trying to replace the irreplaceable.”

If only you had stuck around another year, John, that could be you showing off your dimples four nights a week.
