John Cleese on Late Night: Performing Live With Monty Python After 34 Years

Last night on Late Night with Seth Meyers, John Cleese talked about reuniting with Monty Python at the Tribeca Film Festival in honor of the release of the new documentary. They got up and performed some of their old sketches again, for the first time in 34 years, and Cleese talked about still being afraid of going up. He said the first night, you don’t know if you’ll get up there and maybe not get a laugh. It doesn’t help that Cleese said the newspapers and media were questioning whether they’d really be funny after all this time.
But he described the experience as “like meeting all your best friends when you go to heaven” and his nerves disappeared. Before going on, he said to Eric Idle, we have to behave ourselves, we mustn’t start “breaking up” on stage, which they call corpsing. They made a bet that the first person to “corpse” owed 10gs. Guess who broke up first?
