Joel McHale Describes Hosting the White House Correspondents Dinner for a “Bunch of Ghouls”

Wednesday night on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Joel McHale and Seth compared notes about hosting the White House Correspondents Dinner. The group of people who have ever hosted the event is relatively small, so when McHale found out he was invited to host, he immediately called up Seth asking for advice. Meyers advice was ‘don’t fuck up.’
McHale said it is the strangest audience of all time, saying when you look out into the audience, it’s like looking out into a wax museum. You recognize everybody, and they’re not good looking he said, calling them ‘ghouls.’
He described the evening as an impossible task that starts with a two hour dinner with the First Lady. That seems like it would be amazing, but what you really want to be doing is pacing back and forth and going over your notes, because you’re nervous. Instead you’re making small talk with “one of the loveliest people in the world- the First Lady” and talking about Modern Family. What happens next, he said is even weirder– the President opens for you. Finally, McHale and Meyers agreed, you go up and you realize you are the one thing standing in the way of the ‘ghouls’ getting to go to parties and have their picture taken with Glee.
