Times change and platforms change too, and the “it” place to release your hour special has changed over the years. HBO, Comedy Central, Netflix, Showtime, and other platforms have, at various times been the most sought-after home for new specials. And Jim Gaffigan has gone the Comedy Central route, and the Netflix route.
Tuesday, Jim Gaffigan announced he will release his next comedy special Noble Ape on multiple major platforms (streaming and traditional media) simultaneously including Amazon, AT&T, Charter, Comcast, Cox, DIRECTV, DISH, Google Play, iTunes, Playstation, Verizon, Vudu (Walmart), and Xbox among other platforms, all on July 17. An album version will also be released on the same day in digital and physical forms.
This is Gaffigan’s sixth comedy special and a bold move releasing via the multiplatform system that will make his special potentially available to a wider audience. Gaffigan is a giant in the business, and his choice could signal yet another change in the way the business of stand up. Earlier this Bob Sagat released a brand new hour using the same multiple major platform distribution system.
Gaffigan explains, “I wanted to make sure NOBLE APE is available to everyone at the same time. This show is a very personal hour which deals with Jeannie’s brain tumor and what we went through.”
Jim Gaffigan is an Emmy winner and three-time Grammy-nominated comedian, actor, writer, producer and two-time New York Times best-selling author. He is known throughout the world for his unique brand of observational, self-deprecating humor, which garnered him the title of most popular comic on Pandora with a staggering 647 million spins in 2016. Gaffigan, who is one of the world’s highest grossing stand-up comedians, is currently on his Fixer Upper World Tour.
