Jim Gaffigan just keeps getting bigger. He’s getting a second season of The Jim Gaffigan Show on TV Land, he’s performing at Madison Square Garden on December 12, 2015, and he’s going to perform for the leader of the Catholic world.
In a moment that felt like it was straight out of episode one of The Jim Gaffigan Show, Jim announced on Conan on Monday night that he’s going to be performing stand up comedy for the Pope in Philadelphia. When he got the invite six months ago from the Bishop, he said, he had no idea that he would be performing for the Pope– he thought he was just invited to attend the event. He later learned he’d actually be performing stand up which begs the question, where do you go to work out material for a papal visit? Now, the Pope doesn’t speak English, but that’s okay, food is the universal language.
If you haven’t been following The Jim Gaffigan Show, in the pilot episode Jim goes to the church to pick up an unusually large bible for his wife, and the world erupts in controversy over whether Gaffigan is too religious or not religious enough and it plunges Jim into turmoil.
If you’re not impressed by the Pope as an audience, there will also be a million people at the event, who are coming to see his holiness. Andrea Bochelli, –whose name Jim didn’t know and referred to as that guy– will also be performing, Aretha Franklin will be singing, and Mark Wahlberg is going to host.
“I thought they invited me because I’m the only comedian who believes in God.” Gaffigan said. He also thinks it helps that he has five kids, and what he refers to as a shi-ite Catholic wife, referring to Jeannie Gaffigan, his wife and co-producer and writing partner.
Season Two. MSG. The Pope. Over a million people. How’s Kevin Hart gonna top this?
