Comedian, politican, and ultra marathoner Eddie Izzard raised almost 2 million dollars for charity after completing 27 marathons in 27 days throughout South Africa on Saturday. The comedian said it was the hardest thing he has ever done.
Izzard ran to honor Nelson Mandela, who served 27 years in prison, and to raise money for Sports Relief charity. His route followed Mandela’s story, beginning near where the spiritual leader was born, and ending where he was sworn in as President .
Izzard live broadcast pat of his first run on the 27th day on Facebook, but he wasn’t done yet. He had to complete two marathons on his final day because of an unscheduled rest day earlier this month.
He completed his 707 mile challenge with his final at the foot of a statue of South African leader and President Nelson Mandela. When he finished the final leg of the final run, he told reporters, “I’m very tired.”
